About Us

The African Association of Child and Adolescent Mental Health was created as a platform for all professionals working in the area of children’s mental health (such as psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, paediatricians, general practitioners, mental health nurses etc.), or with an interest in children’s mental health
in Africa and in the African diaspora to network with each other, form collaborations, and to work together to improve the mental health and well-being of children in Africa.

We currently have a footprint in all regions of Africa: East, West, North and South. We aim to have an active presence in all 54 countries of Africa, working together through national organisations as well as individuals and groups, in fostering training, capacity-building, research and policy initiatives for the benefit of child and adolescent mental health in Africa

Mission

The overall aim of the African Association of Child and Adolescent Mental Health is to improve mental health service to children and adolescents in the rural and urban regions of Africa. Specifically, AACAMH aims to:

  • Develop a sustainable, multi-disciplinary Child and Adolescent Mental Health training programme for mental health practitioners in Africa.
  • Increase the number of children seen by trained professionals in specialist children’s clinics.
  • Reduce the number of children admitted as in-patients.
  • Increase appropriate and local referrals.

Vision

It is the vision of the African Association of Child and Adolescent Mental Health to train health workers from a wide range of disciplines and regions to deliver affordable mental health services for children and adolescents across the African continent.
